Haplochromine cichlids have undergone an extraordinary radiation in the lakes of East Africa over the past 5 million years. The cichlids are an ideal model system for studying the genetic basis of speciation and the mechanisms of evolutionary change in morphology, pigmentation and behavior (Kocher, 2004) ( PDF ).
