Education

University of New Hampshire, Durham, NH
Program in Genetics:
The study of Environmental, Developmental, Molecular, and Population Genetics in addition to Bioinformatics and Biochemistry. My proposed thesis, A Gene Expression Comparison of Caenorhabditis elegans cultured in Laboratory and Soil Environments, involves the use of DNA microarrays to investigate differences in the gene expression of nematodes grown in two environments.

UNH Center for Teaching Excellence, Durham, NH... Certificate expected in 2007.
Certificate Program in College Teaching:
Coursework includes "Foundations in College Teaching", "Teaching Methods in Higher Education", "The Role of the College Professor", "Cognition, Teaching, and Learning", and more.

Colorado State University, Fort Collins, Colorado... May, 1985.
Master of Science, Mechanical Engineering:
Coursework included Finite Element Analysis, differential equations, supercomputing, and air pollution control technology. My thesis, A Two Compartment Model for Indoor Air Pollution, derived a closed-form analytical model to describe particulate pollutant concentrations in a two room system. The model included pollutant sources, ventilation and recirculation air flows, surface adsorption of particles, and imperfect mixing of air and pollutant.

Florida Institute of Technology, Melbourne, Florida... March, 1983.
Bachelor of Science, Ocean Engineering:
Covered basic Mechanical, Civil, and Electrical Engineering plus Marine Chemistry and Biology, Physical Oceanography, Hydroacoustics, and Waves. Electives emphasized computer applications. Work-study project involved finite-element analysis of water flow in a canal system and it's effect on pollutant dispersion under tidal influences.

Experience

Daniel Webster College, Nashua, NH... Fall 2005 - date
Adjunct Faculty- Engineering, Math, and Science:
Currently teaching "Intro to Calculus" for the second time and "Intro to Algebra" with approximately 20 students in each. Also conducting all five Algebra recitations (~80 students) for the third consecutive semester. Responsibilities include coordinating with other faculty members for course planning, formulation of assignments and tests, instruction and grading rubrics, et cetera. Individually responsible for day to day lesson planning, class preparation, grading, and working with students who need additional help. Previously also conducted two Physics Labs and two Physics recitations. Student evaluations reflect my respect for others and my sincere interest in students' learning and overall development and well-being.

University of New Hampshire, Durham, NH... 2003 - 2004
Teaching Assistant:

Fall 2003: conducted two class sections of Intro to Biology Lab. Taught the students proper technique in basic biology lab skills, evaluated and graded lab reports and practical exams.
Spring and Fall 2004: conducted recitations for Principles of Genetics. Taught two sections of 15 to 25 students each in each semester. Explained how to approach the homework problems (many require careful logic and some math including statistics in addition to an understanding of the biology involved) and demonstrated their solutions. Prepared visual aids where appropriate. Graded homework, quizzes, and exams. Conducted review sessions and met with students individually or in small groups if they wanted extra help.
For all courses: helped develop and proofread quiz and exam questions, proctored exams, maintained grading and attendance records using BlackBoard. Received positive reviews from my students.

Eastman Kodak Company, Lowell, MA... 2000 - 2001
Contract Programmer:
Expanded an existing driver and companion application to support a variety of digital cameras using several additional low-level protocols. The driver communicates with the cameras and shows the contents of their storage devices as disks on the user's computer desktop. Users simply drag files from the camera volume to their hard disk copy them. The driver also supports tethered control of the camera including the ability to get and change camera settings and to take pictures.

Cimage Novasoft, Burlington, MA... 1998 - 1999
Contract Programmer:
Assumed responsibility for NovaManage and NovaWorkbench for Macintosh. Implemented a variety of bug fixes and speed improvements, added new features, and made other miscellaneous enhancements. Documented and released numerous patches, created HTML versions of documentation, and posted them on NovaSoft's web site. Worked with customers including Sony and Wyeth, business partners, and suppliers including Oracle.

Verizon Laboratories (formerly GTE Laboratories), Waltham, MA... 1998, 1999
Contract Programmer:
Wrote a simple application for comparing sound codecs for telephony applications using live subjects. The test subject hears two sound samples then grades one against the other. Later, returned on request to write a similar application for comparing sound codecs for transmitting voice data across the internet.

Eastman Kodak Company, Lowell, MA... 1996 - 1997
Contract Programmer:
Adapted a Photoshop plug-in to print on the Kodak DCP 9000 printer. Developed the "Cropping dialog" and sound-management code for the Photoshop plug-in which supports several Kodak digital cameras including the DC 120 family.

Digital Equipment Corporation, Inc. (now a part of Compaq Computer), Nashua, NH... 1995 - 1996
Contract Programmer:
Designed and created the user interface for DSCVerifier 1.2 and added advanced technologies to support Adobe's Open Pre-press Environment. Eliminated memory leaks and greatly improved reliability.

Open Text Corporation (formerly Dataware Technologies), Cambridge, MA... 1993 - 1995
Principal Engineer:
Designed and wrote a simplified "user-friendlier" interface for CD Record™ 2.1 for Macintosh. The new interface tied together four component programs into a single application.

Howtek, Inc., Hudson, NH... 1991 - 1993
Macintosh Programmer Specialist:
Wrote software for the ScanMaster D4000 (4000 dpi, 12 bits per color channel) drum scanner. Expanded a Photoshop plug-in scanning module and also wrote an example application to demonstrate scanner functionality. Wrote a SCSI driver for the Macintosh and an ASPI simulator to simplify cross-platform development. These allowed PC SCSI code to be ported unchanged and eliminated months of duplicated effort.

Data Description, Inc., Ithaca, NY... 1990 - 1991
Head Programmer:
Co-wrote Data Desk 4, an exploratory data analysis application. Implemented new graphical and statistical functions, user-interface enhancements, and advanced features. Removed existing incompatibilities. Enhanced speed-critical graphics and vectorized math routines.

QED Technologies, Nashua, NH... 1989 - 2003
Owner:
Wrote an image combination and enhancement program to generate a high-quality image from a group of lower-quality (noisy) ones. Purchased and configured all hardware and software for a local-area network. Installed RAM and processor upgrades, hard disks, and cards for graphics, audio, SCSI, and networking. Designed and wrote a complete telecommunications program to provide simplified credit inquiries for "pulling" credit reports using a modem. Co-wrote the documentation, developed the packaging, and provided customer support. Also developed the web site. Created cross-platform QuickTime videos for the web and for CD-ROM. Videos were captured from videotape or as a time-lapse series of numerous individual images.

General Electric Undersea Systems Division, Syracuse, NY... 1988 - 1989
